Help Us Restore Access to Bearspaw Reservoir

Help Us Save Public Access to Bearspaw Reservoir
Bearspaw Marina was created so that everyone could enjoy Bearspaw Reservoir — safely, affordably, and without needing their own gear.
We offer non-motorized, eco-conscious boat and e-bike rentals, and since opening, we’ve welcomed thousands of visitors, families, and newcomers to the water. We operate with care and integrity — as a local, family-run business, this matters deeply to us. But now, access to the reservoir is at risk — and we need your help.

What’s Happening?
In May 2025, the City of Calgary closed the last legal public access point to the reservoir, removing a historic route used by paddlers, hikers, and families for decades. We stepped in to help — operating on private land and offering safe, low-impact access. The response has been incredible, with daily use increasing tenfold, and visitors coming from across Alberta. But despite our efforts, we continue to face pressure. The City no longer provides access. TransAlta holds the land. And the Province has the power to fix it.

What Can Be Done?
Under Clauses 10.1 and 10.2 of TransAlta’s license, the Minister of Environment and Protected Areas has the authority to approve third-party access to the reservoir. We’re not asking for a favour.
We’re asking for a path forward. All we need is for Minister Rebecca Schulz to authorize continued access through the existing route near the Bearspaw Tree Farm — a safe, controlled path that protects both the land and the people who use it.

How You Can Help
Write a letter to Minister Rebecca Schulz.
It takes 2 minutes, and it could make a world of difference.

Dear Minister Schulz,
I am writing to express my support for Bearspaw Marina and to respectfully ask that you authorize their access to Bearspaw Reservoir under Clauses 10.1 and 10.2 of TransAlta’s license. Bearspaw Marina provides safe, non-motorized, family-friendly recreation in a space that Albertans have cherished for years. Since the City of Calgary closed public access, they have stepped in to fill that gap — and the public response has been overwhelming.
Please use your authority to protect our right to access this beautiful public waterway and support this Alberta-owned, eco-conscious business.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Thank you for standing with us — for access, for fairness, and for the future of Bearspaw.
