Bearspaw Marina is at risk. The City of Calgary has proposed closing the road allowance that provides access to the marina and the Bearspaw Reservoir. This move would block public access to one of the area’s most be loved recreational spaces, which has been in operation since June 2024.
We need your support to protect public access to the reservoir and ensure that Bearspaw Marina remains open to the community.
Why This Matters:
- The City of Calgary is attempting to shut down Bearspaw Marina by closing access roads, citing safety and environmental concerns.
- Bearspaw Reservoir is located in Rocky View County and is a federal waterway, meaning the City of Calgary has no jurisdiction over it.
- The City is ignoring public opinion, with 325 comments submitted in opposition to this proposal, and 323 of them were against the closure.
- The City has made unsubstantiated safety claims about water levels that don’t pose a significant risk to the public.
- The City’s plans to close the road allowance would remove public access to the reservoir, negatively impacting the local community and its recreational opportunities.

Talking Points to Include in Your Submission:
- Unfair Treatment: Bearspaw Marina is being unfairly targeted while other launch points like Ghost Lake and Glenmore Reservoir are free to operate.
- Local Economy: Closing Bearspaw Marina would result in job losses and hurt local businesses and schools that benefit from our operations.
- Environmental Alignment: We provide affordable, non-motorized recreation that respects the natural environment.
- Community Value: Shutting down Bearspaw Marina would deprive the community of a unique, low-impact recreational space.
- Transparency Issues: The City of Calgary failed to properly notify Bearspaw Marina of this proposal, which undermines public transparency.
- Please share your personal experiences.
We are so grateful for your support and hope you’ll stand with us as we fight to keep Bearspaw Marina accessible for everyone. Thank you for everything
